Description

The former Roman Catholic Cemetery Chapel in Southport is a disused building, likely constructed in 1865. It is made of coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a steeply-pitched slate roof adorned with bands of blue, green, and purple slate. The chapel is designed in the Early English style and is oriented on a north-south axis. It includes an east porch, a three-sided north apse, and a west wing, which is likely a vestry.

The exterior features a gabled porch that is offset to the north of the center. This porch has angle buttresses and stepped gable coping, with the upper portion dislodged and lying on the ground. The outer archway of the porch is segmental-pointed with a double-chamfered surround and a dripmould, leading to a similarly arched inner doorway. To the left of the porch is a small segmental-pointed one-light window.

The south gable displays a prominent stepped triple-lancet window with hoodmoulds and gable coping topped with an apex cross. The apse is supported by low buttresses and features a two-centred arched two-light window under a gable at the center, flanked by small arched-triangle windows. On the west side, there is a short gabled wing with angle buttresses and a very tall gable chimney that has offsets. The interior has not been inspected. The chapel forms a group with the adjacent Cemetery Chapels.
