Description

This building on Portland Street in Southport was constructed in 1848 as the first railway terminal for the Liverpool, Crosby and Southport Railway Company. It is now used as club premises. The structure is built of brown brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern and has a slate roof. The design follows a single-depth, double-fronted plan situated very close to the railway track.

The exterior is two storeys and features a two-window range. The facade is nearly symmetrical, with a narrow Tudor-arched doorway containing a four-panel door and a plain fanlight. To the left of the doorway is a small two-over-two sash window. Coupled two-over-two sash windows are located to the right, and there are two small square two-over-two sashes at the first floor. All the windows have raised sills and flat-arched heads, set within chamfered brick surrounds. A large square stone plaque with a moulded surround sits centrally on the first floor; it is now painted white, but was likely originally lettered. The roof has overhanging verges with restored wavy bargeboards and tall extruded gable chimneys. A small single-storey wing extends to the left, with a boarded opening to the front and a small doorway set in the left gable.

The interior has not been inspected. The building represents an interesting survival of simple railway architecture and is one of only two surviving examples on this line; the other, located on Duke Street, has undergone alterations.
