Description

The Former Hoghton Arms Hotel is a building located at No. 2 Hoghton Street in Southport, originally constructed in 1838 by R Wright and licensed in 1841. It has been enlarged and altered over the years. The hotel features scored stucco on brick with painted stone dressings and a hipped slate roof, and it is situated on a corner site with a double-depth plan.

The exterior of the building stands three storeys high and presents a symmetrical three-window main facade facing Hoghton Street. It includes a plinth, panelled corner pilasters at the ground floor, and painted quoins above. There is a cornice over the ground floor, a first-floor sill band, and a modillioned eaves cornice.

On the ground floor, a central porch supported by two fluted columns with an entablature is flanked by canted bay windows that feature cornices and small-paned glazing. The first floor has tall windows with eared architraves, although the original sashes have been replaced with altered 12-pane glazing. The second floor contains square windows with shouldered architraves and nine-pane glazing.

To the left, there is a gable chimney stack, a small square chimney at the junction of the ridges, and a ridge chimney on the rear wing. Extending to the left is a two-storey wing with two windows, possibly once a stable. This wing has tall ground floor windows with eared architraves, cornices, and 24-pane glazing, while the upper floor features 12-pane windows and a bull's-eye window with a keyed architrave.

The right-hand return side of the building, which faces London Street, has three windows that echo the style of the main facade, with eared and shouldered architraves. In the centre, there is a two-storey rectangular bay window with cornices on both floors and large two-light windows with arched glazing bars. To the right of this bay window, there is a loggia designed in a similar style. The interior has not been inspected.
