Description
The Head Post Office, located at 130C Lord Street in Southport, was built in 1901 by H Jansen of the HM Office of Works. This post office is designed in the Free Renaissance style and features red brick with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The building has an irregular L-plan, consisting of a rectangular main range facing Lord Street and larger ranges at the rear.
The structure is four storeys high with an attic and has five unequal bays. The design is symmetrical, with the broader second and fourth bays projecting forward above the ground floor. These bays are framed by slender tourelles that rise from corbels and culminate in prominent attic gables adorned with pilasters and semicircular pediments.
On the ground floor, which is finished in ashlar, the central three bays feature large semi-elliptical arched windows that create an arcade effect, complete with an enriched impost band and arch bands. The outer bays, which are slightly set back, contain square-headed doorways with three-light overlights. The main upper floors are characterized by tall transomed and cross-windows, with the second and fourth bays having coupled windows. A continuous moulded band crosses the second-floor windows at the transom level.
A prominent cornice runs around the entire building, and above this, the gabled second and fourth bays each have a tall round-headed window with imposts and a keystone. The first, third, and fifth bays feature small dormers with steep hipped roofs that end in finials. All windows above the ground floor are sashed, and the attic windows have 6/6 glazing. The building also has ridge chimneys.
The Head Post Office forms a group with the adjacent National Westminster Bank at No.130 to the right. The interior has not been inspected.
