Description

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Anthony is a Catholic church built in 1833, designed by John Broadbent. It features an ashlar facing on the west facade, with stucco returns and stone dressings, topped by a slate roof. The nave consists of seven bays and has a three-bay west facade, which includes a central projecting bay that serves as a porch with an organ loft above, flanked by low blocks at the corners. The chancel has a shallow recess, with chapel recesses to the east. The west facade is adorned with chamfered clasping buttresses that end in pinnacles. It has single lancets at ground floor level and paired lancets above, along with a central stepped triple lancet. The entrance is a plain pointed arch. The returns feature paired lancets between the buttresses, while the east end showcases stepped triple lancets at the chancel and additional pinnacles.

Inside, the wide nave has a coffered ceiling and a deep west gallery with a segmental arched organ recess at the rear. There may have been galleries along the sides of the nave. The chancel arch is a four-centred arch on three orders, and the chapel arches have pointed arches on three orders, all featuring ribbed vaults and elaborate architectural reredoses. There are two niches for statues on either side of the recesses, along with a pierced altar rail and an octagonal pulpit.
