Description
Gateacre Grange is a former house, originally built in the late 1860s and later used as a retirement home for seafarers, before being converted into flats. It was designed by C. Sherlock, with extensions added to the north by E. George in 1883-1884. The building is constructed of rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. It has an irregular plan, consisting of two storeys with an attic.
The design includes several projecting gabled bays; the earlier section has breaking-forward centres with lancet windows in the gables, while the later section features two-light windows in the gables. The windows throughout the building are double chamfered, with those in the later part also having transoms. The entrance is located on the right side, accessed through a gabled porch.
Inside, the building boasts a panelled entrance hall and stair hall, which features a coffered ceiling with a top light, rich balusters, and a fine stone chimney piece that includes two arched recesses above the mantel.
