Description

The Andrew Carnegie Library, formerly known as West Derby Library, is a library built in 1904 by T. Shelmerdine. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and has a slate roof. The building is a single storey with four bays, featuring a canted corner bay and a four-bay right return, with the first three bays projecting. Architectural details include a sill course, paired pilasters, a pulvinated frieze, a cornice, and a parapet. The windows are designed with mullions and transoms, and the second bay features a round-headed window set under a gable. The corner of the building has an octagonal turret supported by buttresses and topped with an arcaded parapet. The segmental-headed windows are adorned with eared architraves that have triple keys. Inside, there is a domical vault in two stages. The round-headed entrance is framed by an Ionic porch that includes a pulvinated frieze and a segmental pediment. The right return of the building is similar in design, while the left return and rear facades also feature two canted bays.
