Description
Wavertree District Library, built in 1902-1903 by Thomas Shelmerdine, is a single-storey library constructed of red brick with dressed stone and a slate roof. The building features three bays, with the end bays projecting forward under gables, while the central bay is recessed above the entrance and has a shaped gable. Stone quoins and bands accentuate the gables, which are topped with a modillioned cornice.
The windows in the end bays are tripartite, supported by rusticated Ionic colonnettes and antae, and feature entablatures with pulvinated cornices. Above these are Diocletian windows framed by Gibbs surrounds and triple keys. The gables are adorned with flanking scrolls and obelisks. The central entrance is flanked by two-light windows and is highlighted by a rusticated tetrastyle Ionic colonnade with a central open pediment. The entrance itself has an architrave with a triple key, and above it is a balustrade and a recessed shaped gable that includes a two-light window with a pediment. The windows throughout the building are fitted with sashes and casements that have glazing bars.
Inside, the library consists of three identical parallel rooms, each featuring iron queen-post roofs with dentils and a clerestory with a dentilled cornice. A bronze plaque with enamel commemorating the opening is located at the rear of the central room.
