Description
The College of Further Education, originally a Technical Institute, was built between 1898 and 1899 by architect Thomas Shelmerdine. This two-storey building features red brick with dressed stone and a slate roof, and it has five bays. The first bay is canted with a gable, while the end three bays are recessed. The ground floor has a flush lintel band, and the first floor includes a sill course, top frieze, and cornice.
The first bay showcases high 3:4:3 light windows set within a stone band, while the last three bays contain 2-light windows with two transoms. The entrance in the second bay is framed by a granite Ionic aedicule with rusticated columns, a pulvinated frieze, and a segmental pediment that features a complete fanlight in the tympanum. The first floor has a parapet that is raised over the windows in the first and second bays, which include 3:4:3-light and 5-light windows with transoms. The end three bays have cross windows, and the first bay has a lunette with a triple key and stone banding. Above the entrance, the second bay displays the inscription "TECHNICAL INSTITUTE" adorned with foliage. There are iron railings to the right of the entrance, and the returns of the building are similar in design.
