Description
Christ Church is a church built in 1870, now used as a furniture warehouse. It was designed by W. & G. Audsley in the Italian Romanesque style. The building features dark red brick accented with bands of blue and orange brick and stone. It has a five-bay nave with aisles that are covered by lean-to roofs, and a northwest tower. The chancel is one bay wide and includes transepts. The aisles are adorned with paired round-headed windows set between pilaster strips and a corbel table, while the clerestory has triple windows. The west end features a three-light window with colonnettes and a rose window above it. The tower has an entrance with a central column and a round tympanum, along with two storeys of lancets and a bell stage that includes paired round-headed lights with louvres beneath a relieving arch, topped with a cornice. The chancel has an east window with three stepped lights, and the transepts have three round-headed lights with a rose window above, with the southern transept likely housing the organ loft. Inside, there is an arcade supported by granite columns with Byzantine capitals and unchamfered arcades, showcasing much brick polychromy. Many windows have been blocked since 1984. The roof features king-posts with arch-braced tie beams.
