Description
Little Wood Lodge is a lodge cottage built around the 1880s. It is constructed of red sandstone and features a bonded plain and fishscale red clay tile roof. The building is single-storey with an irregular plan, primarily cross-sloped, and includes an octagonal room added to the lower left corner.
The lodge has a deeply chamfered plinth with a moulded top, a continuous sill bond, and an eaves entablature that includes a plain frieze and moulded cornice throughout. The street-facing elevation features a projecting central bay with an advanced gabled section. This section contains paired round-headed sash windows set in colonnetted surrounds with incised spandrels, all within a deeply chamfered surround. The gable above is eared, adorned with moulded copings and a central panel displaying a shield.
The side bays also have similar round-headed sash windows in colonnetted surrounds with incised spandrels, all set within chamfered surrounds. Adjacent to the hipped roof of the central bay is a large chimney stack with triple oval-sectioned flues, decorated with plaster and cornices. To the right, slightly recessed, is an open arcaded porch featuring a single keyed round arch at the front and three arches on the right return; the central arch has stone steps leading up to it, while the right-hand arch contains a round-headed sash window.
Other elevations of the lodge display similar round-headed windows in colonnetted and chamfered surrounds, with single windows on each side of the octagonal room, paired sashes on the rear gabled elevation, and triple sashes on the left return. The roofs are hipped, with a pyramidal roof over the octagonal room. The interior is very simple. This building formerly served as the lodge to Croxteth Hall.
