Description
The Knowsley War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920 by Thomas Wickford Potter, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of Portland stone ashlar for the cross and has a pink-coloured stone-set surround.
The memorial features a Latin cross with the main elevation facing southeast. The sides of the cross are gently canted, and it has hollowed semi-circular intersections. The central roundel displays a Lancaster rose carved in relief. All sides of the cross have panels created by narrow incised lines.
The cross stands on a square battered plinth with rounded upper surfaces. On the southeast elevation of the plinth, there is a rebated tablet with gilded incised lettering that reads: "IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 AND WORLD WAR 1939-1945." The plinth is raised off a base formed by two stone steps, surrounded by a square-plan stone-set area.
