Description
A mid-19th century villa, originally a headmistress’s house to Huyton College. The building is constructed of channelled stucco at ground floor level and red brick in Flemish bond at first floor level, with a slate roof. It has an approximately square plan. The architectural style is eclectic with classical features.
The villa is two storeys high, with cellars, and has three windows facing both the principal east and south facades. The ground floor features white-painted, channelled stucco, rising to a first-floor sill band, a plain frieze, and a prominent wooden modillioned cornice over the principal elements of both facades. The east front, the main entrance, is asymmetrical, with a projecting bay offset to the left containing a sash window flanked by coved niches with run-out voussoirs, and a window of three narrow lights at first floor, the middle light blind and the others sashed. A recessed bay to the left has four steps leading to a round-headed doorway with a pilastered architrave and a plain fanlight, above which is a narrow sash window. To the right is a wide bay with a tripartite sash window at ground floor and a twelve-pane sash above. All windows are sash windows, with margin panes, except for the ground floor window to the right, which has a four-pane central section. First-floor windows have painted stone surrounds including ornamental balustrades.
The south front, facing the garden, is also asymmetrical, with a short, pedimented wing offset to the right. This wing has a full-width canted bay at ground floor containing tall tripartite French windows and a large square window above with altered glazing. A round-headed window is located to the right, lighting a porch, and a verandah roof is present to the left. The first floor has eight-pane sash windows, all with margin panes and balustrades matching those on the front facade. The roof is hipped with a shallow pitch, with a central chimney stack. A raised section of the north side wall includes a coved niche at ground floor and a twelve-pane sash window above, along with a recessed, three-storeyed portion with similar margin-paned sash windows on all floors.
The interior has not been inspected, but is known to contain features of a high quality, including elaborate moulded plaster cornices and a decorated staircase with a lightwell.
