Description

This is a house, dating from the 1830s, which is now the clubhouse for Huyton and Prescot Golf Club. Extensions were added in the 1870s. The house is built of stuccoed stone with a hipped slate roof, and has brick extensions. It has two storeys and five bays. Features include a base band, a broad sill band to the first floor, and boxed eaves. The ground floor is largely blind, but the first-floor windows are sash windows with glazing bars; the central window has an architrave, frieze and consoled cornice. The entrance has flat pilasters, flanking lights, and a complete overlight, with a pair of three-panel doors. A Doric porch has paired fluted columns. Two stacks are placed cross-axially. The returns of the house are six bays wide, with a two-bay central forward break; the left return has large 20th-century windows. An extension to the right return contains a square tower with a round stair turret, topped with a pedimented datestone reading "1877/JA”. The top stage of the tower has flat pilasters and three windows. Above this is an entablature and balustrade. The stair turret has slots with round-headed lintels and a cupola. A tower is set back on the left return, connected by a 20th-century flat-roofed range. Vertical strips featuring narrow windows are located between the parts of the building. The clock stage is corbelled out, featuring a frieze, cornice, and a parapet with pinnacles and balustrading. The domical vault has a square lantern with a cupola and a weathercock.
