Description
The Hazels is a house that was part of a Polytechnic at the time of listing. The rainwater heads are dated 1764. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and has a slate roof. The building features a double-pile plan, stands three storeys high, and has five bays with a pediment that spans the entire width. The three-bay centre projects forward under a secondary pediment. There is a band over the ground floor, a first-floor sill band, and a top cornice. The windows have gauged-brick flat arches and are sashed, while those on the second floor have casements. The porch, likely added later, includes angle pilasters and an entablature with a glazed doorcase. The left return has five bays with a three-bay centre that also projects forward, featuring an Ionic Venetian window for the stair. The right return has a low extension and a 19th-century servants' wing.
At the rear, there are three wide bays, with the central bay projecting forward and featuring a three-storey canted bay window. The ground floor has a Tuscan colonnade leading to the canted bay. The central window on the first floor has an architrave, frieze, and consoled pediment, while the side windows have cornices over gauged-brick flat arches. There is a Venetian window in the first and third bays with balustraded aprons, and a balustrade at the canted bay.
Inside, the hall and passages have stone-flagged floors. The hall features a cornice and niches flanking an elliptical arch supported by Tuscan columns, along with a fireplace. The passage has a groin vault on Tuscan columns. There are stairs at each end; the left side has an imperial stair with stone steps that are moulded underneath, square balusters, and weathered handrails, while the right side has an open well service stair with similar details. The first-floor passage is also groin vaulted. A panelled room includes a marble fireplace with coloured panels and an iron grate decorated with swags and an urn.
