Description
No. 1 Vicarage Road is a former savings bank, built in 1839, and now serves as an office. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features a concrete tile roof. It has a symmetrical design and stands two storeys high, showcasing Tudor architectural details. The stone doorway has a depressed arched head, moulded jambs, and a hoodmould, and it contains a part-glazed door with a radiating fanlight. On either side of the door, there is a two-light sash window with a stone sill and a prominent hoodmould. The first floor has three similar windows, and there is one window on each floor of the gables. The gables are adorned with plain barge-boards and finials at the apex. A stone plaque on the right gable features incised lettering that reads: "POULTON SAVINGS BANK 1839." This building was purpose-built to accommodate a social institution typical of its time.
