Description

No. 2 Market Place is a house and shop, likely built in the late 17th century or early 18th century, now functioning as a shop. It is located on the edge of the churchyard, with its gable end facing the Market Place. The building is constructed of rendered brick and has a graded slate roof. Originally designed with three bays, the interior has undergone significant alterations.

The structure is two storeys high, featuring a shop front on the ground floor and a first-floor window with a stone sill and splayed stone head, which has been fitted with a modern frame. On the north side wall, the front bay includes one window on each floor, both with stone sills and splayed stone heads. The centre bay has two small windows, with the lower window consisting of two lights. The back bay features a small square window on the ground floor and a larger two-light casement window above.

The rear gable wall contains three small blocked windows, two located below and one above. Inside, the loft area includes a complete roof truss situated between the second and third bays. This truss has blades that cross at the ridge, with a curved collar that is lap-jointed and pegged, along with a raking queen strut connecting to the tie at the first-floor ceiling level. There are also two trenched purlins on each side, with the lower purlin on the north side featuring a curved windbrace that rises to the principal. Other heavy timbers are visible throughout the interior. Additionally, there is a farmer chimney stack with two flues, positioned on the north side of the ridge between the first and second bays.
