Description
Claughton Smithy is a house dating from the late 17th century, which has been altered, and it includes a former smithy from the 19th century. The building is constructed of slobbered rubble and features a slate roof. The house consists of two bays, with rebated and chamfered mullioned windows of three and two lights on the ground floor, and windows with plain reveals on the first floor. There is a chamfered fire window on the left side. The gable chimneys have brick caps, and a projecting brick weathering on the left-hand (east) gable wall indicates that a lower building with a thatched roof may have once been attached.
The single-storey smithy now connects to the house under a monopitch roof, extending to both the north and south of the main building. Its east wall features a wide doorway with quoined reveals and windows with plain reveals. The house is accessed through a porch at the rear, which leads to a baffle entry against a former firehood. Inside, the chamfered and stopped bressumer remains in place, supporting two chamfered and stopped axial main joists.
