Description

Nos 1 and 2 The Street are two houses that were originally one, built in 1689. They are constructed from sandstone rubble and topped with a slate roof. The buildings are three storeys high and feature three bays, with a drip course. The windows are rebated and chamfered with mullions, except for the left-hand window on the first floor and those on the second floor, which are only chamfered. The ground and first-floor windows have hoods, with the ground-floor windows comprising four and five lights, and a two-light fire window on the left. The first-floor windows include three, three, and four lights, while the second-floor windows have two, three, and two lights. The central door has a moulded surround and a shaped lintel inscribed with '1689 A WM R'. There are gable chimneys, and to the left and right of the main structure are lower additions. The left addition features a two-light rebated and chamfered mullioned window and a gable chimney. The right addition, which was once a shippon, has a similar window and a door with plain reveals. Its right gable wall has a re-set battlemented lintel with a carved badger, the crest of the Fitzherbert-Brockholes family. Inside, the left room of the original house has a firehood bressumer and two exposed axial ceiling beams, all with edge roll mouldings. There is a spice cupboard with a carved door inscribed 'ATAR 1689' in the rear wall of the hearth. The beams on the first floor are also moulded, and in the attic, the timber corbels that supported the chimney cap associated with the firehood remain. The roof trusses feature collars and queen struts.
