Description

Bridge 53 over the Lancaster Canal was built in 1797 when the canal opened, designed by the engineer John Rennie and made of rock-faced sandstone. The bridge supports a lane that runs east from Sturzaker House Farm. It features a single elliptical arch with a stepped keystone above the canal and towpath. The bridge has a hipped design, with its parapets sloping outwards at both ends. These parapets are supported by a band on both faces of the bridge.
