Description

The Church of St John Evangelist, built in 1863 by Corrie, is located in Barnacre-with-Bonds, Calder Vale. It is constructed of sandstone rubble with slate roofs and features a west tower, a nave with a north aisle and south porch, and a lower chancel. The tower includes diagonal buttresses and a pyramid roof behind an embattled parapet. It has bell openings with two cusped lights under a pointed head, and the west window consists of three cusped lights with Perpendicular tracery. The nave has one window to the west and two to the east of the porch, all featuring two cusped lights with depressed pointed arches and Perpendicular tracery. The porch is supported by diagonal buttresses and has outer and inner doorways with pointed heads. The north aisle contains three two-light windows with flat heads and cusped ogee lights. The south wall of the chancel features a window with two cusped lights, a flat head, and Perpendicular tracery, alongside a priest's door and a smaller window. The east window has four lights with Perpendicular tracery and a pointed head.

Inside, the church has brick walls with sandstone dressings. The four-bay arcade features pointed arches chamfered in two orders on columns with four clustered shafts. The tower arch consists of two chamfered orders that die into the responds, while the chancel arch is similar but has attached shafts as responds. The nave roof trusses are designed with arch-braced collars, with alternate trusses having braces that rise from hammer-beams. Timber screens with tracery decoration are located under both the tower and chancel arches. The chancel boasts a boarded waggon roof, carved choir stalls, and communion rails. Both the pulpit and font are made of stone with decorative reliefs. The piscina features a traceried head, and the twin sedilia are crafted from timber. Three of the 20th-century windows are attributed to Morris & Co.
