Description
Lowe's Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the early to mid 18th century and has been altered. It features coursed sandstone rubble that is now rendered, with a composition tile roof. The building has a double-depth plan formed by a two-unit front range with contemporary rear wings that are coupled and gabled. It stands three storeys tall and has three symmetrical windows, a chamfered plinth, and a central doorway with a Gibbs surround. The vertical rectangular windows on the ground and first floors have been replaced with 20th-century top-hung casements, while the second floor has low three-pane windows that were formerly mullioned. The roof is hipped with chimneys on the rear ridges. At the rear, there is a small 20th-century porch at the center and numerous vertical rectangular windows with altered glazing, along with coupled gables.
Inside, the front door opens directly into the left room. The ground floor features chamfered beams with cyma stops, while the first floor has roughly-hewn beams that were formerly boxed and some inserted partitions in the front range. There is a dog-legged open-string staircase with scrolled brackets and turned balusters, which were originally two per tread but now have only one. The rectangular newels are composed of clustered turned balusters and have a broad moulded handrail. Notably, the main axis of the front range has very unusual coupled upper-cruck roof trusses.
