Description
College Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with later enlargements in the 18th century and further alterations in the 19th century. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble and coursed squared sandstone, with slate roofs and brick chimneys. The building has a large, irregular rectangular plan formed by three ranges aligned on an east-west axis parallel to the lane. The central range is probably the oldest, with the southern range adjacent to the lane and the rear range added later.
The farmhouse is two storeys high, featuring a four-window west front made up of three uneven gables. The southernmost gable is set back and overlaps a gabled two-storey porch. This porch has a square-headed doorway with a rectangular lintel and a studded board door, along with a square window above that has altered glazing. To the right, the west gable of the southern range has one three-light chamfered mullion window on each floor, both of which have simple hoodmoulds and are now blocked. The south side of this range has two enlarged windows on each floor and a blocked former doorway at the right-hand end. The east gable has blocked mullioned windows similar to those at the front and features a gable chimney.
The wide intermediate gable on the west front has one square window on each floor, with raised sills, thin lintels, and altered glazing. The narrower gable to the left has a doorway at the junction and one altered window on each floor, all with wedge lintels. There are various chimneys throughout the building. Inside, the interior has been remodelled, but the central range retains chamfered beams typical of the 17th century.
