Description
The entrance lodge to St Joseph's College, a Roman Catholic seminary, was built around 1880-1890 and features associated gate piers and gates. Constructed from rock-faced sandstone with a slate roof, the lodge is designed in a very plain Gothic style and is situated on the north side of the drive in an L-plan layout. It stands two storeys high, with a 2-bay crosswing to the right that includes a doorway in the angle and tall 2-light sashed windows on both floors. The gable has ridged copings with kneelers and a ridge chimney. The entrance is flanked by two square gate piers that have chamfered corners and short octagonal upper stages topped with steep octagonal caps featuring pseudo-lucarnes. The double gates consist of two tiers of straight bars separated by an ornamental band, topped with elaborate scrolled cresting that ramps up to the meeting point.
