Description
The war memorial, designed by architects Pennington & Unwin and built by Messrs Webster and Winstanley in 1927, commemorates the fallen of both World Wars. Constructed from Portland stone, the memorial stands 6.1 metres high and features a square raised base with a stepped approach on the north side. Five polished slate tablets are set into three sides of the base, bearing gilded inscriptions listing the names of 103 who died in the First World War and 31 who died in the Second World War. Flaming torches are sculpted in relief at each corner of the base. An obelisk rises from a low plinth atop the base, tapering slightly to a flat, stepped top. An inscription on the north face of the obelisk reads “FAITHFUL / UNTO / DEATH.” A bronze wreath is positioned lower down the north face, beneath an inscription which reads “TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN / GRATEFUL REMEMBERANCE OF THE 103 / UPHOLLAND MEN WHO GAVE THEMSELVES / FOR GOD AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR / GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS / THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS.” Swords are sculpted in relief on the east and west faces of the obelisk. The memorial is situated within a landscaped garden at the junction of Dingle Road, College Road and Grove Road, Upholland, and was unveiled in April 1927 by G H Banks. Canon C C Thicknesse dedicated the memorial at the same time. The gilded inscriptions were re-gilded around 1989. Foundation deterioration in 1995/6 necessitated dismantling, reinforcement, and replacement of certain components.
