Description
This building, located at 1 Smithy Lane, is a pair of cottages that may have originally served as a Roman Catholic chapel. It dates from the late 18th century and has been altered over time. The structure is made of coursed squared sandstone with raised quoins and features a slate roof. It has two bays and two low storeys, presenting a symmetrical facade. The central area has coupled doorways beneath a large, moulded tympanum that includes an archband and keystone, topped with a raised cross on an oval medallion that touches the eaves. There are two horizontal rectangular windows on each floor, all with raised plain surrounds, and each window consists of three lights with altered glazing. The gable ends are adorned with two flue chimneys that have moulded caps. A small single-storey addition at the right-hand end is not included in this listing.
