Description

Ormershaws Farmhouse is probably from the early 19th century, but a date of 1905 is inscribed on the porch. The farmhouse is constructed of large squared sandstone blocks with a stone slate roof and brick chimneys at the gables. A later addition is made of red brick with a slate roof. The original plan was a double-depth, two-bay configuration, with a projecting porch and a set-back wing added to the left end. The two-storey, symmetrical façade features a prominent, gabled porch which is 1½ storeys high. The porch has a doorway in a 17th-century style, with a moulded surround, hoodmould and a studded door, and an arched single-light window above. To either side of the porch are four-pane sash windows with stone sills and splayed stone heads; the upper windows are smaller than the lower. The rear elevation has a doorway to the first bay, two altered windows on each floor, and a four-pane sash stairlight in the centre, all with very large, splayed stone heads. A single-bay wing to the left, with two lower storeys, has an altered three-light window on each floor, and a small window close to the junction at a middle level. The interior has not been inspected.
