Description

The Old Vicarage is a house dating from the early 19th century, altered subsequently. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with rusticated stone quoins and stone dressings. The building has a square, three-bay by three-bay plan, with a less significant service wing to the rear. It has two storeys and a symmetrical facade. A first-floor sill band runs along the top of the ground floor. The rusticated quoins emphasize the outer corners of the bays, while the inner corners of the bays have plain quoins. The slightly set-back middle bay contains a doorway with a moulded stone architrave and double doors. Above the doorway, on the first floor, is a 16-light sash window. The outer bays each have a similar sash window on both floors. A bow window has been inserted into the left gable wall at ground floor level. The gables contain further sash windows, and two chimney stacks between which the gable wall is carried up to form a horizontal screen or parapet. The rear service wing is of less architectural interest. The interior includes some mahogany panelling with rectangular fielded panels, believed to have been removed from the library at Knowsley Hall when that building was demolished around 1948.
