Description

This small barn, located approximately 30 metres south-east of Lower Tower Hill Farmhouse, is likely from the early 17th century or earlier. It has been enlarged with the addition of a shippon and has undergone alterations. The structure is built of coursed sandstone rubble and features a stone slate roof, which now only covers the outshut and shippon. The barn is arranged in a U-plan, consisting of a 3-bay range oriented north-south, with an integral wing on the west side of the north bay and a small shippon added at right angles to the south bay.

The central bay has two opposing waggon doorways: the west doorway, located between the wing and the shippon, is full height but now blocked and has had windows and a door inserted, while the east doorway is much lower, featuring a cambered timber lintel and is also anciently blocked. The gabled wing on the left has a square window offset to the left and a square loading door above it. To the right, the gabled shippon has a doorway near the front corner of the re-entrant wall. The north gable wall of the main range has an inserted garage doorway.

The most notable feature of the barn is its interior, which contains two raised cruck trusses. These trusses are mounted approximately 1 metre up the walls, with tie-beams extended as spurs and yokes near the apex. The northern truss has blades crossed at the apex and a cross-shaped carpenter's mark on the south face of the east blade, while the other truss has blades meeting the ridge and a raising notch on the north face of each blade. This barn forms a group with Lower Tower Hill Farmhouse, located approximately 30 metres to the north-west.
