Description
St James Church of England School, built in 1889, features an attached master's house. The building is made of crazed sandstone and has a slate roof. It has a T-plan layout, with the main range and a crosswing on the left, while the master's house is on the right. The school is single-storeyed and has a four-window main range with 4-centred arched two-light windows that include Y-tracery. There is a Tudor-arched doorway in the re-entrant of the wing and a three-light window in the gable of the wing, which has a quatrefoil in the head. The side of the wing has a tall octagonal chimney with the date "1889" at eaves level and a large gable towards the rear, which also features a three-light window. The master's house to the right is two-storeyed with steeply pitched coupled gables, two four-pane sashed windows on each floor, and a central 4-centred arched doorway on the ground floor, along with ridge chimneys.
