Description
This barn, located approximately 50 metres east of Upland Farmhouse, dates from the 17th century or possibly earlier. It features a cruck frame with stone cladding and a slate roof. The barn has a four-bay plan and includes a front outshut in the fourth bay. Notable architectural details include stone quoins, a window and door at the left end (located under the loft in the first bay), opposed wagon doors in the third bay, and two small windows in the front wall of the outshut (under the loft in the fourth bay). There is also a lean-to extension made of brick at the left end, which has a blocked former window or door with a wooden lintel above it.
Inside, the barn contains three full cruck trusses, with blades measuring approximately 15 inches by 10 inches near the base. The blades touch at the apex and are trenched for the ridge, with a collar just beneath the apex. The structure has spurs but no tie beams, and the principal rafters are notched on the backs of the blades. On one side, overlapped purlins rest on the backs of the principals, while on the other side, they are further raised on short deep baulks.
