Description

These almshouses, at 102-112 Fox Lane, are reputedly of 1649, but were removed and rebuilt in 1849. They consist of six dwellings arranged with a central range and projecting gabled wings. The construction is primarily brick, with a stone plinth, stone dressings, red sandstone quoins, and a slate roof. There are two pairs of ridge chimneys in the main range, and single chimney stacks at the junctions of the roofs at each end. The front features four boarded doors, each with ornamental iron hinges and studs, two in the centre and one at each end of the main range. Above the doorways are two 3-light windows grouped as single 6-light stone mullioned windows on each side. The re-entrant walls are detailed with a diaper pattern of blue headers. The wings have red sandstone quoins and a 6-light stone mullioned window, with decorative black and white timbering in the gable above. Doors are also located in the return walls of the wings. The rear features a continuous outshut with a cat slide roof to the main range. A stone plaque above the middle doors reads: "FOUNDED AND ENDOWED BY WILLIAM FARINGTON OF WORDEN 1649 REMOVED AND REBUILT 1849." Sandstone tablets carved with different coats of arms are positioned above the other doors.
