Description
The Maden Memorial Fountain, located in Stubbylee Park approximately 70 metres south of Stubbylee Hall, is a drinking fountain dated 1912, as indicated by a bronze plaque. Constructed from granite and featuring bronze plaques, the fountain is set in the centre of a paved deck that is raised on three steps. It has a rectangular plan and stands about 3 metres high, designed in a heavy classical style.
The plinth incorporates semi-circular drinking bowls at the front and back, flanked by pedestals that support stumpy engaged Tuscan columns. Above this, there is a pedimented entablature with a dentilled cornice. The narrow sides of the fountain also feature pedestals topped with scrolls. Notable decorations include bronze lion-head spouts above the bowls, a bronze relief portrait of Henry Maden on the north side, and an inlaid lettered bronze plaque on the west side. This plaque states that the fountain was erected by public subscription in recognition of the Maden family's generosity to the Borough, with the date of September 7th, 1912. The fountain was moved from its original site on St. James's Street in 1923.
