Description

The remains of the Chapel of St John the Baptist at Bailey Hall date back to 1338. The structure is built of sandstone rubble, with some remaining sandstone ashlar dressings. Parts of the north and east walls still stand, reaching a maximum height of about 5 feet. These walls feature a weathered plinth and diagonal buttresses, which have been partly stripped of their dressings. It is reported that a vault remains, although the entrance is now overgrown. Notably, the chapel window in the west front of Stonyhurst was taken from this chapel by the Duchess of Norfolk around 1740 to 1750.
