14/18 Cow Ark Smithy

II

Former smithy, probably late C18th. Squared sandstone rubble with stone slate roof. The south wall has 2 windows with plain stone surrounds, the right-hand one having SR D 1804 and other illegible initials roughly carved on the lintel. Between them is a door with plain stone surround, now blocked to form a window. At the far left is a wide entrance with long-and-short jambs and a timber lintel. The right-hand gable has a coping and a truncated chimney cap with weathered top. To the right of the wide opening is a brick chimney cap, with another truncated chimney on the rear wall. Inside there is a solid stone wall to the right of the wide opening, the right-hand unit having a hardwood roof truss with collar, tie, and raking queen struts.
