Description
The outbuilding and stable block to Clitheroe Castle, which is occupied by Ribble Valley Borough Council, dates from the mid-19th century and features Gothic architectural elements, incorporating fragments of older stone. The structure is built from coursed stone and has Welsh slate roofs, standing two storeys high.
On the left side, the outbuilding includes mullion and transom windows beneath rectangular dripmoulds, and an arched door in an ashlar porch to the right, also with an irregular dripmould. It has a crenellated parapet. There is an archway leading to a small court at the rear, which features lancet windows. To the right, a crenellated section projects forward on carved brackets and has three ventilation slits below, topped by a square turret.
The stable block, which is a single storey and constructed of rough stone, has a circular window above a segmental-headed entry with a keystone. It also features two lancet windows set within a square-headed architrave and an elliptical-headed entry. There are later sliding doors for the carriage entry, as well as a small gable with a round-headed window, and a door and window framed in stone surrounds.
The outbuilding and stable block, along with Clitheroe Castle, form a cohesive group.
