Description
Clitheroe Castle is a historic castle mentioned in the Domesday Book. It mainly consists of a small 12th-century square tower keep with flat corner turrets, one of which contains a staircase. The original entrance was on the second storey but is now accessed through breaches into the ground storey. All floors appear to have been made of wood. The keep is strategically located on a steep crag. The inner bailey was likely to the south, and remnants of ancient walls and masonry can be seen in the park and incorporated into nearby buildings, stables, and offices. Clitheroe Castle is currently occupied by Ribble Valley Borough Council, and the outbuilding and stable block form a group with the castle.
