Description

The Grand Cinema is a civic hall, now functioning as a cinema, built between 1873 and 1874 as the Clitheroe Public Hall and converted to the Grand Kinema in 1921. It features irregularly coursed stone walls with ashlar dressings and a slate roof with crestings. The building is oriented sideways to the road, with a small symmetrical entrance block that includes the manager's office, ladies' lavatory, and foyer. The main hall is a higher, single-storey structure with the stage located to the right and a projection suite upstairs to the left.

The front range has a central gable above the doorway, which is flanked by engaged columns, double doors, and a top light set within a deeply moulded Gothic pointed arch. Impost bands connect this feature to the windows on either side, which are topped with hood moulds and ball stops over square casement windows. Similar windows with hood moulds are found on the side return, while simpler square casements are present on the hall itself.

Inside, a narrow foyer with a terrazzo floor and paybox leads directly into the hall. The auditorium has a shallow rake and can accommodate nearly 400 people, with the stage at one end and the projection suite upstairs at the other. The open timber truss roof features hammerbeams set on wall brackets and wrought-iron tie bars. The walls are lined with timber panelling, and gas secondary lighting is provided on wall brackets, complemented by brass pendant lights that enhance the mock-Tudor style of the interior.

The Grand Cinema is noted as a fine early example of a public hall that has gained additional interest through its conversion into a cinema.
