Description
West Cottages, located approximately 400 metres west of Huntroyde, is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the late 16th century. It was remodeled in the 19th century into two dwellings and is now derelict as of 1984. The building is constructed from coursed sandstone blocks with quoins and features a tiled roof that has one chimney on the left gable and two on the ridge.
The structure has three bays, with a lean-to at each end, and stands two storeys tall. The north front includes two inserted Tudor-style doorways located in the first and second bays, along with windows that have recessed cavetto-moulded mullions and hoodmoulds. The ground floor windows consist of two, four, and four lights, while the first floor has two, three, one, and four lights. The windows in the first bay are definitely insertions, while the others may be original or restored.
On the rear, there is a Tudor-style doorway at the junction of the first and second bays, with windows similar to those at the front: five, two, and four lights on the ground floor, and two altered windows along with a three and a two-light window in the first bay on the first floor. The right gable wall features a small chamfered light at the first floor.
Inside, the first bay contains an inglenook bressumer with a cyma-stopped chamfer and two large chamfered beams. The third bay has similar beams with a cyma-stopped broad chamfer and chamfered joists.
