Description
This is a 17th-century aisled barn with an attached stable range, located on the north side of Simonstone Hall. The barn has been altered and features a stable range from the 18th century. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with quoins and has a stone slate roof. The barn consists of five bays, with the east side facing the yard. This side includes a central segmental-headed wagon doorway, two square windows to the right, and a blocked chamfered doorway at the right end. The west side is covered by a later addition. The stabling, which is in two sections, continues to the right and is two storeys high. It has a vertical joint with quoins in the centre, segmental-headed wagon doors at each end, a plain doorway on each side of the junction, three windows at ground level, and three round pitching holes above.
Inside the barn, there are aisles in the fourth and fifth bays, with aisle posts made of reused timber on square stone bases. The roof features collar trusses with angle struts. There are three vertically aligned lampholes in the inner end of one cheek of the porch on the west side, and the interior includes relocated harr-hung batten wagon doors. The stables retain some original stalls.
