Description

Higher Birkett Farmhouse is a house dating from the late 18th century, with an adjoining former house built in 1686. The structure is made of sandstone rubble and has a slate roof. The main house has a double-pile plan, featuring a central entrance and end stacks. It is two storeys high with three bays. The windows have plain stone surrounds, and the right-hand ground-floor window includes two square mullions. The entrance door also has a plain stone surround.

The former house, located to the right, has a continuous drip course on both the ground and first floors. On the ground floor, there is a two-light window with a plain stone surround and square mullion, and to the right, a one-light window that is rebated and chamfered with a segmental head. On the first floor, there are two three-light windows that are rebated and chamfered with mullions. At the rear of the former house, there is a door and a window, both featuring plain stone surrounds.

To the east of the farmhouse is a barn that has a wide entrance with plain reveals and a door with a plain stone surround to its right. On the first floor of the barn, there are two pitching doors with plain reveals. At the rear of the barn, there is a re-set chamfered door surround with a triangular head.

Inside the old house, on the first floor against the west wall, there is a plaster panel on a former chimney breast decorated with plant stems, leaves, and acorns. The initials 'RLA' and the date '1686' are inscribed in raised letters.
