Description

Birks Farmhouse and the attached barn are likely from the late 17th century and were enlarged early on, with some alterations made. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with quoins, and the front is cream-washed. It has a roof made of slate and stone slate. The farmhouse is L-shaped, consisting of a single-depth, two-unit range oriented east-west and facing south, with a rear outshut added to the second unit.

The exterior features two storeys and three windows. There is a lean-to porch in the center, flanked by square 20th-century two-light casements, a one-light fixed window to the right (likely a former fire-window), and three 20th-century casements on the first floor. Some of these windows may have originally been mullioned, as an earlier description noted two three-light windows at ground level, one of which has lost a mullion. Additionally, the sill of a former three-light mullioned window with chamfered mullions is now loose at the front of the house. The gable chimneys are present, with the right one being corbelled.

Attached to the west end of the farmhouse is a small barn that forms a projected wing. The right-hand gable wall has a blocked former doorway next to the rear corner, featuring a shallow triangular head and chamfered surround, indicating a former end-baffle-entry plan. The added lean-to outshut has a blocked square window on this side. The rear of the building has restored or modernized windows.

Inside, the former housepart in the second bay includes a built-in spice cupboard to the right of the current chimney-breast, which has a plain panelled door on butterfly hinges, though this area has otherwise been refurbished. The parlour in the first bay retains a chamfered axial beam and original joists, along with a small original fireplace that is now blocked.
