Description
The dog kennels near the River Ribble, located approximately 90 metres northeast of Gisburn Bridge in Gisburne Park, are likely from the late 18th century and are currently in a derelict state. Constructed from limestone rubble with sandstone dressings and brick inner walls, the structure resembles a sham castle. It features two round towers on either side of a lower central section, all topped with parapets that have weathered copings in front of brick vaults, although any roof covering is now missing.
On the west side, each tower has a chamfered doorway at ground level and an arrow slit on the first floor; the right-hand tower has a plain stone surround, while the left-hand tower has lost its dressings. The central section contains a chamfered doorway with a semi-circular head, flanked by arrow slits, with the right-hand slit retaining its plain stone surround.
On the east side, each tower has an oculus with a plain stone surround at ground level and an opening on the first floor that lacks dressings. The central section has a blocked doorway with a plain stone surround and an ogee head, flanked by arrow slits with stone surrounds. Inside, there are brick vaults, with those in the central section supported on brick piers.
