Description
Middleton Hunt Kennels, built in 1858 for the Birdsall Estate, is a notable structure made of rendered brick with a Welsh slate roof. The design features a symmetrical layout with a central block and side wings, all of which have dog pens in front and are accompanied by staff houses. The central section is two storeys high and consists of one bay, showcasing rusticated quoins and rendered walls on the ground floor. It features a wide keyed elliptical arch, a first-floor band, and a 16-pane fixed window flanked by bas-reliefs of medieval kings' heads. A clock is positioned above, and the gable has coping with shaped kneelers. A rusticated bell-turret with a moulded cornice is topped by a wrought-iron weathervane shaped like a fox.
The flanking wings are divided into three sections, each with a rusticated door-frame that holds an iron gate, a 16-pane sash window in a keyed surround, and a dog pen. The staff houses are two storeys tall with four bays, featuring a central section that breaks forward beneath a gable. These houses also have rusticated quoins at the corners and rustication on the ground floor, with a first-floor band and 16-pane sashes in moulded stone architraves throughout. The outer bays of the ground floor have small fixed windows, and there is a door in a rusticated architrave on the return of the central section of each cottage. The gables have coping with shaped kneelers and end stacks. These kennels were specifically designed to allow the gentry to view the hounds up close.
