Description

Knott Gate is a house, likely built in the late 17th century, that has been altered over time. It is constructed from slobbered rubble and features a slate roof. The building has a two-unit plan and includes a former farm building to the north-east that is now part of the house. It stands two storeys high and has two bays.

On the ground floor, the left-hand window has a rebate and an inner hollow chamfer; it was originally a four-light window but now has two remaining mullions. The right-hand window has a plain stone surround with a central square mullion and glazing bars. On the first floor, the left-hand window features a chamfered surround made from fragments of a 17th-century window, while the right-hand window is sashed with glazing bars and has a plain stone surround.

To the right of the right-hand bay, there is a flight of external stone steps. At the top of these steps is a stone platform that forms a hood over a ground-floor doorway, which has long-and-short jambs. There is a window to the right of this doorway with a plain stone surround. Above, the first-floor doorway also has a plain stone surround. The right-hand gable includes a window with plain reveals on the ground floor and a former pitching hole, now converted into a window, on the first floor. At the rear of the house, there are additional windows with plain stone surrounds.
