Description
No. 1 Town End is a house built in 1843, constructed of rubble with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. It has two storeys and three bays, with the central narrow bay projecting and featuring a steep gable topped with a wooden finial. The windows are framed with chamfered stone surrounds and hoods, and include glazing bars, wooden mullions, and transoms. The ground-floor windows consist of six lights, while the first floor has cross windows in the two outer bays. The central window on the first floor is a single light with a segmental head, lacking a hood, and includes glazing bars. Above this window is a carved stone coat of arms with the motto 'NE QUID NIMIS'. The door, located in the central bay, has a chamfered stone surround with a triangular head and hood. This house appears to be built in the same style as No. 2 Church Street and Central Stores, which are also dated 1843 and are adjacent to it.
