Description

SD 53 NE HAIGHTON HAIGHTON GREEN LANE

5/92 Barn c.30 metres north of Haighton Hall Farmhouse

GV II

Barn with shippon, probably later C17, altered. Coursed sandstone with quoins, some hand-made brick, slate roof. Long range on north-south axis, a later addition with a granary at the south end (this part higher, and of less interest), with wagon entrance close to the junction. East side wall is of random rubble patched with brick, except at loft level, which is of hand-made brick; opposed segmental arched wagon entrances (now mostly blocked with brick) have chamfered surrounds of dressed stone, rusticated voussoirs and block keystones, and further north both sides have 2 chamfered doorways altered as windows and one square loading door to the loft; north gable wall has 3 doorways with chamfered surrounds and a similar loading door above. Interior: traditional arrangement of central feeding passage and flanking manure passages, with 2 rows of double stalls; (roof and interior of south end not inspected). Item said to be surviving east range of formerly more extensive complex to the west, to which the wagon archways gave access.
