Description
This barn, located approximately 30 metres north of Haighton Hall Farmhouse, dates from the late 17th century and has been altered over time. It is constructed of coursed sandstone with quoins, some handmade brick, and features a slate roof. The barn is a long structure oriented on a north-south axis, with a later addition that includes a granary at the southern end, which is taller and of less architectural interest. Near the junction, there is a wagon entrance.
The east side wall is made of random rubble that has been patched with brick, except at the loft level, which is constructed of handmade brick. There are opposed segmental arched wagon entrances, mostly blocked with brick, featuring chamfered surrounds made of dressed stone, rusticated voussoirs, and block keystones. Further north, both sides have two chamfered doorways that have been altered into windows, along with one square loading door leading to the loft. The north gable wall has three doorways with chamfered surrounds and a similar loading door above.
Inside, the barn has a traditional layout with a central feeding passage and flanking manure passages, containing two rows of double stalls. The roof and interior of the southern end were not inspected. This barn is said to be the surviving eastern range of what was once a more extensive complex to the west, which the wagon archways provided access to.
