Description

The George Hotel and the adjoining shop to the right are located on Church Street in Preston. This public house and attached shop were built in the mid-19th century and have been altered since. The building features brown brick for No.89 (the George Hotel) with a painted stucco facade, while No.90 is entirely painted. It has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys high over a cellar, with a total of five windows across the front.

No.89 is symmetrical and showcases channelled rustication at the ground floor, raised quoins above, a plain frieze, and a prominent moulded cornice. The central doorway has a moulded architrave with a lintel inscribed "GEORGE HOTEL 1922" and a bracketed cornice. The cellar windows are fitted with iron grills, the ground floor windows have altered glazing, and the upper floors feature sashed windows. There are chimneys on the side walls, both in front of and behind the ridge.

To the right of No.89, there is a large basket-arched wagon entrance leading into No.90, which has voussoirs that connect to the rustication of No.89. No.90 has a 19th-century shop front at the ground floor, with two sashed windows on each floor above, and a frieze and cornice that continue from No.89. The shop also has side-wall chimneys.

Inside No.89, there is a mosaic tiled floor in the porch that is lettered "GEORGE HOTEL," along with some other early 20th-century tiling.
