Description
The war memorial, located approximately 5 metres east of the school at Harris Orphanage, was erected around 1920. It features a polished granite pedestal that stands about 2 metres high, topped with a white stone statue of a young soldier. The soldier is depicted with his hands resting on the butt of a rifle, which is held muzzle down on his left boot. The pedestal is inscribed on the front with the words: "IN / LOVING MEMORY / OF / THE OLD BOYS / OF THE / HARRIS ORPHANAGE / WHO FELL IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914 - 1918. / THEY DIED THE DEATH OF / HONOUR FOR / GOD, KING, AND COUNTRY / ERECTED BY THEIR ORPHAN / COMPANIONS." Additionally, the left and right sides of the pedestal display lists of names, with 8 names on one side and 9 on the other.
