Description
The Gate Lodge to Harris Orphanage, along with its associated gate piers and gates, was built between 1885 and 1888 by Benjamin Sykes of Garlick, Park, and Sykes for the trustees of E.R. Harris. It is constructed from Accrington red brick with sandstone dressings and features a Cumberland slate roof, showcasing a Vernacular Revival style. The building has a T-plan layout and is a single storey.
The prominent gabled wing facing the drive includes a canted bay window and small square flanking windows beneath an oversailing gable, which is adorned with applied black and white studding and a pargeted apex that displays a shield inscribed with "A.D.; 1887." A lean-to porch is located at the left angle, while another gable, decorated similarly to the first, faces the road. At the ridge near the junction, there is a tall Tudor-style triple chimney stack with a moulded cap.
The gate piers consist of four inner piers that create a carriage gateway, flanked by pedestrian gates, and two outer piers. All piers are made of red brick heavily banded with sandstone, standing approximately 3 meters high with hemispherical tops. The innermost piers feature ornamental iron lampholders, and the gates are made of iron spear-railing.
